Why Philosophers Quill exists
The world has always had enough scholars who memorize the texts, and enough poets who make the struggle sound beautiful. But a philosopher had to live by it. That is the only one of the three that actually costs a man anything.
Socrates chose execution over exile because a life spent keeping quiet was a betrayal of his own soul, and Plato spent the rest of his life making sure we would know it. Aristotle argued that character is not declared but practised: built act by act, or not at all. Epictetus was born a slave and spent his life teaching men that true freedom is an inward discipline. Seneca wrote extensively on courage, and was then ordered by a tyrant to open his own veins. Marcus Aurelius did not write for an audience. He wrote private notes to himself in a freezing military tent on the Danube, commanding an empire in the worst decade of his life, just to hold himself to a standard.
They did not write to be quoted. They wrote to survive themselves.
That is the difference we are interested in. Philosophers Quill does not treat philosophy as decoration. We treat it as an uncompromising standard a man agrees to be measured against, especially when it is inconvenient.

Most philosophy sold on apparel is not what the philosopher actually wrote. Some are modern paraphrases passed off as originals, or translations quietly reworded to avoid copyright fees. The most famous "Aristotle" quote on the internet, "excellence is a habit," was actually written by an American historian named Will Durant in 1926. It is a fine sentence, but it is not Aristotle's.
We, by contrast, print only from public-domain translations. We use the exact, historical renderings of scholars like George Long, R. M. Gummere, Benjamin Jowett, and W. D. Ross. We print what the translator actually wrote, and we tell you exactly which one on every single product page. If we cannot show you where a line comes from, we do not print it. That rule has cost us designs we liked, but it makes the standard real.
