WEAR THE PHILOSOPHY

Epictetus was born a slave. He spent his life arguing that freedom is not a status anyone can grant you or take away. It is a discipline, practiced inward, over the only thing you actually govern. He had more right to that sentence than almost anyone who has said it since. Set in monumental, architecturally balanced type across the back, with our quill mark at the left chest and the wordmark inside the neck. An intellectual uniform, not a trend piece.

ON ATTRIBUTION

This line is usually credited to the Discourses. It is not there. Like Socrates, Epictetus wrote nothing himself. His teaching survives through his student Arrian, and this sentence comes down through the Fragments, the loose collection of sayings attributed to him outside the four surviving books. So that is what we print. A smaller claim than most sellers make, and an accurate one.

  • The Details: Tear-away tags for all-day comfort. Under 6% shrinkage.
  • The Ink: Warm Parchment on Pigment Black and Midnight Navy; deep ink on Pigment White.

FIT & CARE

  • The Silhouette: An intentionally oversized, boxy cut with a slightly cropped length, a vintage academic shape made for everyday wear.
  • Sizing: Order your standard size for the intended relaxed fit; size down for a closer cut.
  • Care: Machine wash cold, inside out, and separately. Tumble dry low. The pigment-dyed character deepens beautifully with time.

A note on garment dyeing. Each piece is pigment-dyed individually, so shade and texture vary slightly from garment to garment. That variation is intentional. It is what gives the finish its depth, and it is not a fault. Color may transfer or fade with the first few washes, so wash separately and keep it away from pale fabrics.
